About Kashi Lace

A family lace business from Surat, India's embroidered-trim capital.

Kashi is the old name of Varanasi, India's brocade city; we borrow the word for what it stands for, fine Indian handwork. Our own home is Surat, which today produces most of India's embroidered trim: zari borders, mirror work, sequin lace, neck yokes. For decades our family has worked inside that trade, first making lace and now buying from the workshops we know best and supplying garment makers across India.

Kashi Lace is the same business, opened to the world. We pick a short list of designs from our workshop network, photograph every piece against a ruler so you know exactly what you are getting, and ship it tracked from Surat.

What we look for

• Handwork and embellishment that machines elsewhere do not do: mirrors set by hand, zari, sequin string, gota.
• Designs that hold up on a garment, not just in a photo.
• Small minimums, so a boutique or a home sewer can try one yard.
